On 22 September 2018, Dr. James Tucker and Minister Beverly Pegues invited leaders to Harris-Stowe State University in St. Louis, MO, to lend assistance to Calvin Pearson with Project 1619 to commemorate 400 years of the first African slaves arriving in the United States of America. During the meeting, it was decided to initiate a movement that would bring African Americans, Africans on the Continent, and Africans in the Diaspora together as one people.

Coincidentally, the Founders met on the same date that President Abraham Lincoln signed the preliminary Emancipation Proclamation on 22 September 1862, declaring that all slaves in the South would be free on 1 January 1863 if the confederate states did not return to the Union.
